Dear Reader
A quick catch-up of what has been happening since we last emailed a newsletter.
First off, I have to vacate my premises in beautiful West End. The other business which is in the cottage has been expanding at a great rate and they need my room.
So, as I am having to move, and I live north side, I am looking for premises in the Wilston, Grange, Stafford, Lutwyche, Windsor areas. If you know of someone who wants a thoroughly lovely psychologist to share, (of course I am biased) please pass on my details.
Looking for the right spot has been taking a lot of my time, as has my internet marketing course that I have been attending.
Thanks to all those who responded to the questions you want answered on depression, I am now writing an ebook on this important topic.
What else, my new website is in progress and looks fantastic, thanks to Vista Web Services. I’m bringing the site into this year and probably this century, with a new WordPress based theme, plus blog.
I am thrilled with your feedback as well from those who attended the Think and Grow Rich Property and Cashflow Seminars. I’m told it was awesome!
My other piece of news, is that finally, The Wealthy Spirit Retreat is going ahead in beautiful Ubud, at www.oneworldretreats.com Bali from February 20 to 26, 2011. I am jumping up and down with excitement on this one.
Please email me if you are interested in attending as I would love to see you there! Once the full programme has been compiled, I will let you know ASAP!
I thought you may be interested in being on a weekly teleconference to discuss Principles of Consciousness, Healing aspects, mental health, meditation etcetera. I want to know the best night and time for these to occur. I would like to know what you would expect to pay, how long the call should last, and the best day and time, so please let me know.
In Love, Light and Laughter,
Narelle
2. Is it depression or is it stress?
This is an excellent question that was asked of me recently so here is part of my response.
Depression symptoms
Depression as you may know, is made up of a basket of symptoms, a bit like a cake has several ingredients. Without all the ingredients, the cake doesn’t turn out, and in diagnosing depression, if you don’t have at least 7 to 9 of the symptoms, and you haven’t had them for a month, then it is not classified diagnostically as depression.
Okay, so maybe you have some of the symptoms and had them for a couple of weeks? This is still not diagnosed as depression, as it could be a stress response to a situation (also known as a situational stressor) that you find yourself enduring.
Stress
I use the word enduring, because when you experience ongoing stress, you often endure it. Take for example, if you were riding a push-bike up a very slight incline but it was a long long way until the path flattened out, your legs would begin to cramp up because of the effort of maintaining your muscles in certain positions for a long time, while travelling slightly uphill.
With constant on-going stress from a situation that occurs daily or very regularly, it’s like riding that bike with your mental muscles, and so the harder it is to stay on the bike and continue riding. You get fatigued, you might lose focus, you might not be able concentrate on anything else, your thoughts are absorbed by or you obsess on this stress.
The more that you take care of yourself, with love, laughter, joy, a sense of humour and making fun of the situation just like you would if you were with others while riding a bike (my legs are going to drop off, I will be the only bike rider with legs on autopilot, etc.) and look for the positives, the easier that trip is going to be.
Distraction techniques
Just this morning while doing a yoga posture, I noticed that I had stayed much longer on one side because my thoughts had wandered to something else, than on the first side. I didn’t even realise that I had wandered off.
Often, we need to shift our focus off what is happening and how it makes us feel, and take our focus to a different direction and a more exciting way of thinking. This allows us to lose the physical stress or anxiety or down or depressed feelings, as we focus on something more rewarding, more positive, more exciting.
If you are one of the unfortunate people who has lost the ability to feel happy, and also may not really feel anything at all, this does take quite a bit of time, energy and practise to achieve a more optimistic outlook.
Music for Mood
Upbeat and positive music can help, as can doing a shimmy to unkink the rigid body postures that develop to keep us in a holding pattern of depression, stress or anxiety.
Many people are afraid of their emotions. Afraid that they will explode, afraid that they will kill someone because they get so angry, afraid that they will shatter. What you have forgotten is that it may feel like that will happen, or that you will never feel again, but it is simply untrue. You will come out the other side of depression, you will come out the other side of a panic attack, you will recover from being stressed.
The more that you beat yourself up mentally, the more you lock the pattern down, and the more you continue the cycle. If someone outside of you verbally tore strips off you, you would curl up and die inside, or respond with anger. What can your body do when you do it to yourself ? It switches off and numbs out, or completely rebels.
For me, it is always back to basics: love yourself better, love yourself healthy, love yourself well. Find something about yourself to love or that you want to love and hold onto that thought and make it a belief and a value about yourself.
If you find this too difficult to do by yourself, then make an appointment to see me soon.
PS, if you have a great easy recipe that you would like to share, please email me with it. I want more please. Please send me a recipe.
