Preparation for Caesarian Birth

prepare for caesarianSo you are scheduled for a Caesar! How exciting to bring your baby into the world knowing what day and time that will happen.

You can have everything prepared to make life easier when you get home: meals in the freezer, washing done, house clean and tidy, baby’s room all ready for that new bundle of joy. In case you are wondering what makes me remotely prepared to write about this, I would like to reassure you that I trained as a Childbirth Education Instructor and taught many parents how to prepare for childbirth. Since then I have studied hypnosis formally and have attended training in hypnosis for childbirth.

So how about you? Are you mentally prepared for the birth? Research shows that Mums-&-Dads-to-be who practise relaxation have an easier time of it, so why not be prepared for a caesarean birth too?

Self-hypnosis and relaxation for childbirth

Research shows that mothers-to-be who learn and practise relaxation in preparation for childbirth may have the following benefits:

  • blood pressure is more stable
  • thoughts are more positive
  • feeling of connectedness with the baby may be increased
  • milk production is assisted
  • immune system is stronger
  • healing occurs more quickly

Why wouldn’t the same benefits occur for the mother-to-be who plans on having a Caesarean section? Or has to have one because of complications during birth. One never likes to think of something going wrong but occasionally the birthing process needs medical help so that both mother and baby are safely delivered.

Self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques are one way of assisting the process even before Mum knows she is pregnant.

Raspberry leaf tea was also suggested to assist the uterus. After the birth, blood loss may be reduced, and bleeding (like a period) may not last as long as it would without raspberry leaf tea. Please see a naturopath or pharmacist for directions on taking raspberry leaf tea as different amounts are drunk at different stages of pregnancy.

To sum up, relaxation and self-hypnosis may be beneficial to alleviate fear and anxiety during childbirth and when a caesarian is necessary. If your baby does need to be delivered by caesarian then the important thing to remember is that medical help brought your baby safely to your waiting arms.
